Peter Obi Calls for Government Transparency and Dialogue Amid Fuel Subsidy Debate

Peter Obi has once again weighed in on the debate surrounding the removal of fuel subsidies in Nigeria. In a recent interview with News Central, Obi called for greater transparency from the government, arguing that if the subsidies have been eliminated, there should be clear disclosure of how the savings are being allocated to public projects. He expressed concern that while the subsidy has been removed, Nigeria’s debt and living costs continue to increase, affecting citizens negatively.

Obi also emphasized the importance of safeguarding democracy, advocating for the use of biometric systems and increased scrutiny over government borrowing and expenditures. He highlighted the need to address urgent developmental priorities.

In response to Rabiu Kwankwaso, the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) presidential candidate who is confident about the 2027 election, Obi stated that his focus remains on the current challenges facing Nigerians rather than on future elections, and he is not seeking the presidency out of desperation.

Regarding the prosecution of #EndBadGovernance protesters, Obi supported their right to peaceful demonstration and suggested that the federal government should engage in dialogue with the protesters rather than resorting to punitive measures. Reflecting on his tenure as Anambra State governor, he recalled handling similar situations by directly engaging with protesters.
