Nigeria Opens AFCON 2025 Qualifiers with 3-0 Win Over Benin Republic
Nigeria's Super Eagles kicked off their Africa Cup of Nations 2025 qualifiers with a commanding 3-0 victory over Benin Republic on Saturday at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
According to News Nation, Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen were the standout performers for Nigeria. Lookman, recently nominated for the 2024 Ballon d'Or, scored twice to put the Eagles on course for their next AFCON campaign. His first goal came in stoppage time of the first half, breaking the deadlock after a resilient defensive effort from Benin.
Osimhen, who has recently transferred to Galatasaray from Napoli amidst interest from Chelsea and Al Ahli, added a third goal in the 78th minute. This goal, scored shortly after replacing Victor Boniface, showcased why he is the reigning African Footballer of the Year.
