JUST IN: INEC presents voter register to political parties ahead of Edo guber election

Ahead of the Edo State governorship election scheduled for September 21, 2024, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) convened a significant meeting today, August 20, 2024, at its State Head Office.

The purpose of the meeting was to present the voter register to political parties and key stakeholders.

Prof. Rhoda Gumus, INEC National Commissioner responsible for Edo State, urged all political parties to adhere to democratic values and collaborate with INEC to ensure a credible and transparent election.

"Our goal is to guarantee a free, fair, and transparent election. It is essential that all stakeholders work together to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.

"Every vote is important, and it is our shared duty to ensure that this election is carried out with the highest level of transparency," she stated.

Dr. Anugbum Onuaha, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Edo State, highlighted INEC's efforts to update and maintain an accurate voter register, ensuring it includes all eligible voters in the state.

"We are committed to keeping the voter register current and inclusive.

"Political parties are encouraged to engage constructively with us, and we are dedicated to addressing any concerns swiftly to facilitate a smooth electoral process," he said.

Mr. Tunde Gafar, Director of Voter Registry, provided an in-depth presentation on the voter register and discussed the introduction of new technology designed to improve the efficiency and reliability of the election process.

"The new technology will help streamline the electoral process and ensure the election is conducted effectively and reliably.

"Having a better understanding of the electorate will assist political parties in their campaign strategies and ensure all eligible voters are properly represented," he explained.

The meeting was attended by representatives from various political parties, election observers, and other stakeholders, all of whom expressed their commitment to supporting a peaceful and transparent election.
